Farmington is a city in San Juan County, New Mexico, with a population of approximately 45,000 people. It is located in the northwest part of the San Juan Basin, at the junction of the San Juan, Animas, and La Plata rivers (on the Colorado Plateau ).
Farmington is the principal city of the Farmington, New Mexico Metropolitan Statistical Area, and serves as a hub for much of northwestern New Mexico and the Four Corners region. The city is best for its baseball and the Ricketts Ball Park, Home of the Connie Mack World Series.
The main industries in Farmington include: natural gas, coal, and oil. There are major coal mines operated by BHP Billiton 15 to 19 miles southwest of Farmington. The coal is used for nearby electric power generation at the Four Corners Power Plant.
There are a number of Indian reservations nearby. To the West, lies the Navajo Nation (reservation), to the northwest lies the Ute Mountain Indian Reservation, and in the Southern Ute Indian Reservation is to the northeast. There are also a number of historic Native American sites are close by, including the Aztec Ruins National Monument and Salmon Ruins. These are ancient pueblo sites short distances northeast and east of Farmington. Other attractions include the Mesa Verde National Park and Chaco Culture National Historical Park.
